  • Discuss with your coworkers and family how to respond to a disaster should it occur.
  • Discuss what to do about power outages and personal injuries.
  • Learn how to turn off the water, gas, and electricity at main switches.
  • Post emergency numbers near telephones.
  • Teach children how and when to call 911.
  • Pick one out-of-state and one local friend or relative for family members to call if separated by disaster (it is often easier to call out-of-state than within the affected area).
  • Establish meeting places.

Discuss with your coworkers and family how to respond to a disaster should it occur.

Prepare an emergency kit for the type(s) of emergencies that could occur near you:

  • A battery-operated AM/FM radio.
  • Flashlight with fresh batteries.
  • One gallon of bottled water per person per day for drinking and sanitation.
  • Three days of food that won’t go bad and does not have to be heated or cooked. Remember a can opener and eating utensils.
  • Toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, soap and bleach.
  • Food for pets.
  • Towels.
  • Toys for young children.
  • Candles and matches.
  • First-aid kit.
  • Medicine and other items essential for your family's survival.
  • Telephone, although you should use it only for emergency calls.
